Be Careful of These Addictive Prescription Drugs

Unfortunately, there are prescription drugs that are addictive. These drugs may help treat one health issue, but they end up creating another one through their habit-forming properties. Sadly, 18.9 million Americans misuse prescription drugs every year. With this in mind, be careful of these addictive prescription drugs:

Opioids

One of the most addictive prescription drugs is opioids. Drug deaths topped 3,000 last year, with opioids being a big contributor to it. They’re used to for pain management. But because they create a feeling of euphoria, they’re often abused.

Oxycodone

Also referred to as OxyContin, oxycodone are used for pain management, like opioids. It gives the user a sedative effect.

Fentanyl

Sadly, there’s a drug that’s 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine that’s being prescribed. It’s fentanyl. In fact, deaths increased 600 percent from 2014 to 2016.

Alprazolam

Most people know alprazolam by another name: Xanax, the brand name. Xanax helps treat anxiety and panic disorders. However, people tend to misuse and abuse it for the fast-acting sedating effects it provides.

Sadly, deaths because of addiction to benzodiazepine, which Xanax is, have increased over the past 20 years. Specifically, deaths increased more than four times in 2015 than in 2002.

Amphetamine

Sometimes, amphetamine is referred to as speed. For example, Adderall combines amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. And a lot of times, it’s abused by people that are sleep-deprived. It provides increased energy to its users.

Phenobarbital

Pheonbarbital is used to control seizures. However, because it causes a relaxing feeling, it’s often abused. Also, it creates a calming effect as well as drowsiness.
